SPOTLIGHT: Good Old Lower East Side (GOLES)

Good Old Lower East Side (GOLES) is a neighborhood housing and community organization that has served low and moderate-income residents in the Lower East Side (LES) of Manhattan since 1977. Through a culturally competent and holistic strategy of Direct ServicesResident Education, and Community Organizing, GOLES helps residents of the LES stay in their homes, combat economic & social inequality, ensure a healthy & resilient environment, as well as participate in, and influence, decision making that affects their lives and their neighborhood, shaping the future of New York City. GOLES has become a "second home" and safe environment for many residents of the LES; more than 60% of the staff and board live in the LES and represent the communities served.

Formed during a time when arson, building abandonment, and economic crisis were peaking in the area, GOLES began by helping tenants exercise their legal rights to organize and defend their homes, community, and city. Over the ensuing 42 years, GOLES expanded the scope of its work to include its current areas of focus: rent-regulated and public housing, land use, environmental justice, work readiness, healthy aging, and youth.

With no plans on slowing down, their long-term goals include increasing resident power to fight displacement and gentrification, preserving and increasing the number of available low-income housing units, expanding community self-determination over the use of public space, and making sure all residents of the LES can live, work, and play in a clean and healthy environment.

For the last four decades, GOLES continuously devoted themselves to making the Lower East Side a better place by fighting alongside its residents. If you'd like to get involved or participate in one of the many rallies, trainings, walking tours, or more that GOLES provides, please see their upcoming events

Since 2001, Good Old Lower East Side has been one of the organizations that have used the Neighborhood Preservation Center's meeting room space. For a full list of our meeting room organizations, please visit our website.
