Description:
Since 1987, the West 181 Street Beautification Project has involved hundreds of neighborhood residents in creating and maintaining a community garden. The organization operates a playground and park, staffed by volunteers and by neighborhood youth who receive stipends after doing extensive volunteer work with and for younger children. The organization also advocates for the Little Red Lighthouse and Fort Washington Park along the Hudson River, sponsors a year-round youth leadership training program, and has been instrumental in getting public agencies to improve services and restore gardens and parks after construction projects.
